Wider spacing will be more comfortable than narrow.
Ceiling Hooks
If you are installing a ceiling hook, remember you will need to find ceiling joists. If you are installing your swing parallel to the joists, you will have a range of options that you can set your width to. If you are going perpendicular, your spacing will be determined by the spacing of the joists such as 24, 36 and 48 inches.
Low Ceilings/Stands
If you have a low ceiling, or you are using a stand, you can remove the length of chain. Do not remove the springs. This can affect the headrest adjustments so please see below.
High Ceilings
If you have ceilings higher than 8 foot, you can space your ceiling hooks further apart. For example a 48 inch spacing on a 10 foot ceiling will be roughly the same angles as a 36 inches spacing on a 8 foot ceiling.
Most people with 8 to 8 foot ceilings should be fine with the installation chains included. If you have higher ceilings, you can buy chain at a hardware store very inexpensively. Recommended would be to buy 2 pieces of 2/0 chain or 1/4 inch chain with a weight rating of at least 300 pounds in a length equal to your ceiling height. So for a 10 foot ceiling, get 3 pieces that are 3 foot long.
